The guaria morada, also known as the purple country girl, is the national flower of Costa Rica. The flowers do not have roots in the soil. They are a type of epiphyte and grow on other trees for support. Although it is called the purple orchid its colors range anywhere from blueish-purple to a light shade of pink. When in Costa Rica, the best places to see these flowers are in the Central Valley in pre-mountainous areas,500 to 1,000 meters above sea level.
